Gruesome’s Road Kill Cafe

Songwriting has been a hobby of mine for more years than I can remember. I was influenced by family, who played piano, and a neighborhood buddy who had an amazing voice. I knew that I could not sing, so I figured maybe I could play guitar and write songs.

So, some 60 plus songs later, I’m still writing.

Here are the lyrics to my latest song, inspired by California Senate Bill No. 395, Chapter 869. This song is being recorded as a demo in Nashville, as I write this post. A country-novelty song destined to become a comedy classic! I’ll post it for listening when it’s completed.

“Gruesome’s Road Kill Café“

Driving down country roads, like I do most everyday

I saw a sign that read, fresh country grub at Gruesome’s cafe

Well I was a bit hungry, so I pulled into the parking stall

And as I walked up to the front door, I read the specials posted on the wall.

            You kill ’em, we’ll grill ’em

            Awesome possum or smear-o-deer

            Rack of raccoon, all simmered in beer

            Served up fresh all day

So I went in and ordered up the chicken, that almost crossed the road

A chunk of skunk, swirl of squirrel and toad ala mode

You might think it sounds so sick, that it tasted awfully bad

But I just gotta tell y’all it was the best darn meal that I’d ever had.

The Tonight Show

One night, I’m just sitting at home and I received a text. A friend of mine informed me that he just heard a song that I’d co-written on the Tonight Show. “What, that cannot be!“

The song “She Got The Ring (And I Got The Finger)” was on a bit that Jay Leno did on his show. This was simply amazing!

I was able to find the spot on the internet. Mr.Leno (who by the way is awesome), had a regular segment on his show called “Country or Maury.” Maury referring to the Maury Povich show.

Jay shows the picture below to the audience and asks them to decide – “Maury,” mild clapping and then, “Country.” The audience goes wild.

Country it is, next you see this picture and hear the song playing in the background.

Believe me, this was a cool moment in my songwriting journey.
